The World's Fastest Seating Chart (challenge description)
This is a competition - your speed will be measured and displayed!
Using the interface on the next page, we will attempt to set a new world record for the fastest seating chart generation. Last year's group took a pathetic 197 seconds (thanks Uri), so this should not be a problem. The task is simple but you will need to prepare for it in advance to perform well. Our target is an accurate and complete seating chart of the classroom on the first try in under 1 minute elapsed time.
The challenge will begin when I give you the password.
When you arrive on the next page, you will be prompted for your name. Enter your first name quickly in the form and either press return or click on the "my name is" button.
After you enter your name, you will need to quickly click on the displayed names of up to two specific neighboring students. Orient yourself facing the front of the room. You will need to select the student immediately in front of you and the student just to the right of you. If a student does not exist in that position, simply reverse the direction (pick the student behind you or to the left of you). Make sure you know the names in advance to eliminate confusion and distraction. Students who click on the wrong names will be shamed in public.
Note that new names will not magically appear on the name click page. You will need to reload the page at a reasonable rate to look for newly added names. But beware - pressing reload on your browser will attempt to submit the same data twice and will slow you down. So instead use the clearly labeled "reload" link which is below the hyperlinked list of names.
During your frantic activity, a seating chart will be updated and displayed in near real-time on the projector. An added benefit of finishing first will be watching the seating chart evolve.
